With deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Archdeacon Tony Shehata, a beloved husband, devoted father of Suzanne (James) O’Mahoney-Naughton, Mira Elias and Christine Sochacki, adoring Gido of Colleen (Joe) O’Mahoney-VanBladel, Rita Elias, Brian (Emily) O’Mahoney, Mary (Luke) Kraus, Ava Sochacki, and Freddie Sochacki, preceded in death by his siblings Raymond, Fred, Joseph and Therese and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews, faithful servant of God, and cherished member of the Saint John the Baptist Melkite Catholic Church community.

Born in Egypt in 1935, Archdeacon Tony carried with him a deep love for his faith and his Church throughout his life. After marrying his beloved wife, Denise, in 1960, they immigrated to Chicago in 1969 with their two young daughters, where they found a spiritual home at Saint John. From the moment he arrived, Archdeacon Tony dedicated himself to the service of God and His people.

Archdeacon Tony first served as a member of the church choir, sharing his powerful voice and extensive knowledge of sacred hymns to enrich the worship experience of countless faithful. His love for the liturgy and devotion to the Church inspired generations of parishioners.

Although he felt called to the priesthood from a young age, that calling took a different path. In 1997, at the invitation of Bishop Nicholas Samra, Archdeacon Tony entered the Diaconate Program. After years of study, prayer, and formation, he was ordained to the Holy Diaconate in 2001. Through his faithful service, wisdom, humility, and devotion, he eventually attained the rank of Archdeacon, becoming one of the most respected and beloved members of the clergy.

For more than two decades, Archdeacon Tony served the altar with reverence and dedication, proclaiming the Gospel, leading worship, mentoring younger servants, and preserving the rich traditions and sacred hymns of the Church. His unwavering faith, gentle spirit, and commitment to serving others left an enduring impact on all who knew him.

As one of the longest-serving members of our parish community, Archdeacon Tony was truly a pillar of the Church. He devoted his life to glorifying God, supporting his clergy, and strengthening the faith of those around him. His example of selflessness, kindness, and steadfast devotion will continue to inspire future generations.

Above all, Archdeacon Tony was a devoted family man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family with all his heart. His greatest joy was sharing his faith with those he loved and witnessing God's blessings in their lives.

While we mourn his passing, we take comfort in the promise of the Resurrection and give thanks for the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. May his memory be eternal, and may the Lord grant rest to His faithful servant in the company of the saints.
