Katherine L James

Katherine L. James was born on March 9, 1939 in Hancock County, Georgia to Maceo Dixon and Mary Ingram. When she was one year old, she moved with her family to Detroit where she spent most of her life.

Katherine passed away peacefully September 14, 2017 in Elmhurst, Illinois, surrounded by her loving daughter; beloved mother of LaTonya Dixon, Eboni James and the late LaWanda Washington; dear sister of Herschel Dixon, the late Lula Dixon and the late Maceo Dixon Jr.; cherished grandmother of Lugina (James), Santonya (Edward) Owens, James, Janetta and Jurrien, great grandmother of Tyshawn Collins, Damion, DeJuan Jackson, Dior, Shainna Bonner, Jamauri, Janay, Janai, Diamond, JaSean and the late DeMarco; proud great grandmother of many; dear aunt and friend of many.

Katherine devoted the majority of her time and energy to her faith and family, caring for her children with unconditional love and patience. Her faith gave her strength and courage to face life’s most difficult moments. A very special part of her life was spent with Lowell Spearman, father of Eboni, who never hesitated to take a very important role of a step-father to all of Katherine’s children.

Katherine took refuge in words: “Jehovah has called me to peace”. When she wasn’t busy taking care of her family, she spend time on her passions: cooking, baking, sewing and crocheting. Her life portrays a story of a very strong and good hearted woman – Katherine’s creativity, love and smile will always remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
